Nós vemos cada problema como um caminho.
Como o começo de uma solução.

Pragma Advogados. Closer to the solution.

Our name almost says it all. We're lawyers, pragmatic and a solution-focused law practice. In an increasingly complex and interdependent world, as a law firm we simplify problems and solve them. In practice, spanning multiple areas of expertise. We don't seek litigation for litigation's sake, but we have the best experience bar none, which is great for business.

At Pragma, we believe in results.

We like problems.
Every problem is seen as a journey.
Towards a solution.
We have a network and offices in Lisbon, Porto, and Espinho. We are a team of lawyers resulting from the merger of MNA Advogados, Morais, Nascimento, Ávila & Associados and Barros Sales & Associados. Pragma, our brand, is new, but our story dates back to 1945. This is now the third generation of lawyers.

We reconcile the uncompromising, strategic defence of our clients’ interests with a scrupulous respect for ethics. We stand for practical, empathetic legal practice. Your problems are our problems. With us by your side, your problem always finds a partner to guarantee seamless and first-class practice, technically and ethically.

We get you closer to finding a solution.

Every story has its beginning. Ours involves experts able to build mutually-beneficial relationships. Now in the third generation, we began as follows:

The world breathes a sigh of relief. Across multiple cities spanning five
continents, folks of all colours and creeds take to the streets to celebrate.
The Second World War had ended.
In Espinho, a northern city where houses run along
coastal streets, Amadeu Morais - father of current partner
Amadeu J. Morais - opened a law office after graduating in Law from Coimbra,
one of the world’s oldest universities.

1960

Each generation is defined by endeavouring towards their ambitions.
Those who experienced World War II just wanted to be able to live in
peace with their families and communities.
The next generation, in the 1960s and 1970s, sought to shake up the status quo and
their parents’ understandable conservatism. “Banning is banned”
was heard on every street corner: dreams but also projects. Thus, while maintaining
his office in Espinho, Amadeu Morais opened a practice in the Ancient, Very Noble,
Always Loyal and Undefeated City of Porto, in Praça Guilherme Gomes Fernandes.

1964

The world doesn't stop. As Liverpool’s Fab Four toured the US for the first
time and the first high-speed train made its maiden voyage in Japan,
Joaquim Manuel Gomes Motta was also setting out on his journey. In Lisbon, he
founded the firm that would lead to Barros Sales & Associados (one of the two
companies which merged into the current one), taking on the clientèle from the
office of his father, José Gomes Motta, a noteworthy presence in the capital’s
legal scene between the 1920s and the 1960s.

1974

On the “new day clean and whole”, the Armed Forces and the people,
“q“who are in charge”, took to the streets. With the Carnation Revolution on April 25,
ortugal embarked on its path to democracy, consolidated on 25 November
of the following year. Amadeu J. Morais and José Barros Sales - the two founding
partners of the current firm - met during their military service where they both served
in legal roles, representing their respective branches of the armed forces: the former
in the Navy, and the latter in the Air Force. Chance, coincidence, fate?

1976

The outside world saw the rise of U2 and Apple computers. Ten months after the
Constituent Assembly began its work, Portugal unveiled a new Constitution.
Due to their friendship, Amadeu J. Morais and José Barros Sales embarked on a
professional, informal and sporadic partnership between their respective firms.
The deal was done years before, with so many factors bringing them together...

The decade couldn’t have gotten off to a better start. With more bridges and fewer walls.
The Berlin wall had already crumbled when Nelson Mandela was finally set free in the Rainbow Nation.
Gomes Motta & Sales, later to be known as Barros Sales & Associados, was established in Lisbon,
with Joaquim Manuel Gomes Motta and José Barros Sales as founding partners. In the north,
Amadeu J. Morais, despite continuingto be a solo practitioner and keeping his office in Espinho,
joined forces with other colleagues in a new Porto office.

90’s / 00’s

In 1992, Francis Fukuyama, convinced that liberal democracy is the final form of government for all
nations, published “The End of History and the Last Man”. He couldn’t have been further from the truth.
Let’s take a closer look. Nuno Morais, Ricardo Nascimento, Manuel Sales, and Pedro Ávila
started their activities as lawyers. Everything was coming together for an exciting new chapter.

2010

Between the 2008 global financial crisis and the start of the Troika assistance programme for Portugal
in 2011, Amadeu J. Morais, Nuno Morais and Ricardo Nascimento, alongside Pedro Ávila, didn’t waste
any time, founding MNA Advogados - Morais, Nascimento, Ávila & Associados -, and opened
their office in Avenida da Boavista, Porto, creating a professional, specialized and complementary law practice.

2012

Despite the various crises - financial, economic, social, environmental, etc. - the story continued to
grow stronger. In Switzerland, CERN announces the discovery of the Higgs boson, the new elementary particle.
In Portugal, Barros Sales & Associados and MNA Advogados enter into a formal, elementary partnership agreement.

2022

The world is more volatile, uncertain and ambiguous, in the wake of the pandemic crisis that has devastated
the planet. In this year, Pragma Advogados is born, as a result from of the merger between MNA
MNA Advogados and Barros Sales & Associados.
Calling the new brand “Closer to the solution” is not a coincidence.
